Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Actinic granuloma is a rare, chronic, self-limiting skin disorder characterized by elastolytic granulomas.
  • Its pathogenesis remains largely unknown, primarily affecting sun-exposed skin.

Observation:

  • A case study of a middle-aged woman presenting with multiple annular erythematous lesions is described.
  • The patient also exhibited associated dyslipidemia and hypothyroidism.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed degenerated elastic fibers with histiocyte aggregates and giant cells, indicative of elastolytic granulomas.
  • Actinic granuloma is noted to be infrequent in the Indian demographic.

Implications:

  • Accurate differentiation from conditions such as sarcoidosis and granuloma annulare is crucial for effective management.
