Microscopic colitis (MC) causes chronic diarrhea with normal-appearing colon scopes. Budesonide is the best short-term treatment, but more research is needed for long-term strategies.
Area of Science:
- Gastroenterology
- Internal Medicine
- Pathology
Background:
- Microscopic colitis (MC) is a chronic colonic inflammation.
- It presents as chronic non-bloody diarrhea, primarily in older adults.
- Limited scientific evidence exists compared to other inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).
Purpose of the Study:
- To review current information on microscopic colitis.
- To describe diagnostic methods for MC.
- To outline available drug treatments for MC.
Main Methods:
- Conducted a literature search of the Pubmed database and CAPES Portal.
- Used keywords: "microscopic colitis", "collagenous colitis", "lymphocytic colitis", and "review".
- Selected articles published between 1996 and 2015.
Main Results:
- Microscopic colitis is a relatively newly recognized gastrointestinal disorder.
- Research on MC pathophysiology and immunology is still in early stages.
- Budesonide is the most well-documented short-term treatment option.
Conclusions:
- Further research is required to understand MC.
- Long-term treatment strategies for microscopic colitis need further investigation.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
Inflammatory Bowel Disease III: Diagnostic Studies and Management I-Nutritional Therapy
Diagnostic studies
A colonoscopy is the definitive screening test, distinguishing ulcerative colitis from other colon diseases with similar symptoms. During a colonoscopy test, inflamed mucosa with exudate ulcerations can be observed, and biopsies are taken to determine the histologic characteristics of the...
Chronic Bowel Disorders: Introduction
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the gastrointestinal tract. The distinctive feature is recurrent abdominal pain associated with altered bowel movements, manifesting as constipation, diarrhea, or fluctuating between both. The...
