Background:

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is often comorbid with stuttering.
Safety behaviors are commonly used by individuals with SAD to prevent negative outcomes during social interactions.
These behaviors can maintain anxiety and impede treatment progress by preventing fear extinction.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the self-reported use of safety behaviors by adults who stutter.
To examine the association between safety behaviors and pretreatment fear of negative evaluation and negative cognitions in adults who stutter.

Main Methods:

133 adults who stutter participating in an online cognitive-behavior therapy program completed a questionnaire on safety behavior use.
Correlations were calculated between safety behaviors and pretreatment scores on measures of fear of negative evaluation and negative cognitions.

Main Results:

132 out of 133 participants reported using safety behaviors.
A significant correlation was found between the use of safety behaviors and higher scores for fear of negative evaluation and negative cognitions.

Conclusions:

Adults who stutter report extensive use of safety behaviors.
The use of safety behaviors in adults who stutter is associated with increased fear of negative evaluation and negative cognitions about stuttering.
Findings suggest that safety behaviors may negatively impact individuals who stutter, warranting further investigation.
