Hypomagnesemia predicts postoperative biochemical hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy.

Postoperative hypomagnesemia is a key risk factor for biochemical hypocalcemia. A significant drop in intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) levels is the main predictor for symptomatic hypocalcemia, even in patients with normal parathyroid function.
