Abstract:
Epidemiological data clearly show that high blood pressure is associated with cardiovascular mortality and progression of chronic kidney disease. Although several randomized controlled trials performed over the last decades have demonstrated a cardiovascular benefit of reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients, solid evidence for general and specific blood pressure targets, especially in the population with chronic kidney disease, is lacking. In this context, recently published trials have provided novel insights in the management of hypertension. Here, we review and discuss the existing evidence and the current guidelines on blood pressure targets in both the general and the population with chronic kidney disease.
