A microperforate hymen can cause painful intercourse and bleeding but does not prevent pregnancy. Surgical correction allowed for the safe removal of retained pregnancy tissue.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Gynecology

Background:

  • Subocclusive hymenal anomalies can impact sexual health and reproductive function.
  • Microperforate hymen is a rare condition characterized by an imperforate hymen with a small opening.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old patient presented with amenorrhea, vaginal bleeding, and abdominal pain.
  • Physical examination revealed a microperforate hymen obstructing the vaginal introitus.
  • Pregnancy was confirmed with retained products of conception.

Findings:

  • The microperforate hymen interfered with intercourse and menstrual flow.
  • Hymenectomy successfully evacuated retained products of conception.
  • The patient recovered uneventfully after hymenectomy and hymenal repair.

Implications:

  • Microperforate hymen does not cause infertility and can permit pregnancy.
  • Early detection of hymenal anomalies can improve patient quality of life.
  • Increased awareness of rare hymenal conditions is crucial for timely diagnosis and management.
