Vascular Spasm01:16

Vascular Spasm

4.2K
The vascular phase, also known as vasospasm, is the initial stage of hemostasis, crucial for preventing excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. After a vessel is cut, nerves in the damaged area trigger pain and other sensory impulses. Simultaneously, the smooth muscles in the vessel wall contract, resulting in a vascular spasm. This contraction reduces the vessel's diameter at the injury site, slowing or stopping blood loss through the vessel wall. Vascular spasms typically last...

Nervous Tissue: Glial Cells

7.4K
Glia, or neuroglia, are vital support cells that assist neurons in their functions. The term "glia" originates from the Greek word for "glue," reflecting their role in holding the nervous system together. These cells can be categorized into six types: four in the central nervous system (CNS) and two in the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
The CNS glial cell includes the astrocytes, the oligodendrocytes, the microglia, and the ependymal cells.
Astrocytes are star-shaped glial...

Summary

This study describes a rare perineural vascular proliferation, an unusual hamartomatous growth of small vessels and nerves in the hand. The findings challenge the classification of such lesions as intraneural hemangiomas.

Area of Science:

  • Histopathology
  • Vascular Biology
  • Neuropathology

Background:

  • Perineural vascular proliferations are exceptionally rare, with limited literature often classifying them as intraneural hemangiomas.
  • Understanding the precise nature of these lesions is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • A case of a 28-year-old male presenting with a slowly developing nodule in the right palm over 8-12 months.
  • Microscopic examination revealed a vascular proliferation within connective tissue, entrapping small nerve bundles.

Findings:

  • The lesion exhibited characteristics of a hamartomatous growth involving both small vessels and nerves.
  • Histological features suggest it is distinct from a true hemangioma originating within a nerve.

Implications:

  • This case expands the understanding of rare vascular and nerve-related lesions in the extremities.
  • It highlights the importance of detailed histopathological analysis for differentiating hamartomatous proliferations from true neoplasms.
