Statin therapy significantly improves survival in women aged 80 and older, but not in men. This study highlights gender-specific benefits of statins in very elderly populations.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Prognosis of statin therapy in adults aged 80+ is poorly understood.
- Gender differences in statin therapy outcomes for the very elderly are unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between statin therapy and mortality.
- To examine gender differences in statin therapy's impact on survival in individuals aged 80 years and older.
Main Methods:
- Historical prospective study at a tertiary medical center.
- Review of medical charts for patients aged ≥80 years admitted over one year.
- Analysis of all-cause 3-year mortality and survival rates based on statin use.
Main Results:
- Statin use was associated with significantly lower 3-year mortality in women (24.2% vs. 57.1%).
- Women using statins showed significantly higher 3-year survival rates for cardiovascular prevention.
- Statin therapy was independently linked to reduced 3-year mortality in women (HR=0.3).
Conclusions:
- Statin therapy is linked to improved 3-year survival exclusively in women aged 80 and above.
- Findings suggest a gender-specific benefit of statins in the very elderly population.
