We identified Developmental Landmark Agnosia (DLA) in a child with congenital prosopagnosia. This finding suggests a potential taxonomy for navigational disorders in developmental topographical disorientation.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Developmental Psychology
- Cognitive Science
Background:
- Congenital prosopagnosia, a condition affecting facial recognition from birth, was the initial concern for a 6-year-old boy.
- Previous research has explored the testing and rehabilitation of congenital prosopagnosia.
Observation:
- The patient exhibited deficits in recognizing familiar landmarks and places, in addition to congenital prosopagnosia.
- Performance was assessed using a neuropsychological battery and eye movement recordings.
- Difficulties extended to misrecognizing unfamiliar places, as confirmed by eye tracking.
Findings:
- This case presents the first evidence of Developmental Landmark Agnosia (DLA).
- The patient did not show deficits in recognizing common objects.
- The findings suggest a specific impairment in landmark recognition within a developmental context.
Implications:
- The identification of DLA supports the possibility of establishing a taxonomy for navigational disorders within Developmental Topographical Disorientation.
- This research may inform future diagnostic criteria and therapeutic strategies for topographical disorientation.
- Understanding DLA contributes to the broader classification of spatial cognition and navigation disorders.
