Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a meta-analysis assessing the relationship between tea consumption and the risk of developing osteoporosis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, and WanFang databases up to March 30, 2016.
  • Inclusion of 17 studies (2 cohort, 4 case-control, 11 cross-sectional).
  • Meta-analysis using random-effects models to derive odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs), with heterogeneity assessed by Cochrane I.

Main Results:

  • The overall odds ratio for osteoporosis in the highest versus lowest tea consumption categories was 0.62 (95% CI, 0.46-0.83).
  • Significant heterogeneity was observed (I² = 94%, P < .01), but no publication bias was detected.
  • Subgroup analyses consistently showed that tea consumption was associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis across all examined subgroups.

Conclusions:

  • Tea consumption appears to be associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis.
  • The findings support a protective role of tea in bone health.
