A new ionoluminescence (IL) spectral imaging system was implemented. PyMca software was adapted for simultaneous analysis of IL, PIXE, and RBS data, confirming system performance.
Area of Science:
- Nuclear Physics and Instrumentation
- Materials Science and Spectroscopy
Background:
- MeV ion imaging facilities like micro-PIXE (Particle-Induced X-ray Emission) and micro-RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry) are established.
- A new ionoluminescence (IL) spectral imaging system has been implemented at the Van de Graaff laboratory in Tehran.
- Handling large datasets from concurrent IL and MeV ion imaging measurements requires versatile processing software.
Purpose of the Study:
- To adapt and employ open-source PyMca software for simultaneous processing of micro-IL and common MeV ion imaging data.
- To validate the performance of the newly implemented micro-IL data acquisition system.
- To demonstrate the software's capability in analyzing combined micro-PIXE, micro-RBS, and micro-IL experimental data.
Main Methods:
- Implementation of an ionoluminescence (IL) spectral imaging system.
- Adaptation of the open-source PyMca freeware for data processing.
- Modification of PyMca to support the OM_DAQ listmode data format for micro-IL data.
- Simultaneous analysis of data from micro-IL, micro-PIXE, and micro-RBS experiments.
Main Results:
- PyMca was successfully adapted to process and analyze large datasets from micro-IL measurements concurrently with micro-PIXE and micro-RBS data.
- The adapted software demonstrated appropriate performance for the micro-IL data acquisition system, confirmed via a case study.
- The study presents the capabilities of PyMca for integrated analysis of multiple MeV ion imaging techniques.
Conclusions:
- The adapted PyMca software provides a versatile solution for simultaneous analysis of micro-IL, micro-PIXE, and micro-RBS data.
- The implemented micro-IL system and the data processing workflow are effective for advanced materials characterization.
- This integrated approach enhances the analytical capabilities at the Van de Graaff laboratory.

Salts are ionic compounds composed of cations and anions, either of which may be capable of undergoing an acid or base ionization reaction with water. Aqueous salt solutions, therefore, may be acidic, basic, or neutral, depending on the relative acid-base strengths of the salt’s constituent ions. For example, dissolving the ammonium chloride in water results in its dissociation, as described by the equation:
