Radiation Associated Meningiomas:The Case for Repeat Radiotherapy
1Department of Radiation Oncology, The Prince of Wales Cancer Centre, High St, Randwick, New South Wales, Australia.
Radiation-associated meningiomas (RAM) in children treated with radiotherapy can be managed with surgery or, in select cases, repeat radiotherapy. This study evaluated 18 patients, finding repeat radiotherapy offered good outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Oncology
- Radiation Oncology
- Neurosurgery
Background:
- Childhood radiotherapy, particularly whole brain radiotherapy for leukemia prophylaxis, is associated with an increased risk of developing intracranial meningiomas.
- Radiation-associated meningiomas (RAM) represent a significant long-term complication in pediatric cancer survivors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the clinical characteristics of radiation-associated meningiomas (RAM) in pediatric patients.
- To assess the feasibility and outcomes of repeat radiotherapy for RAM.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective audit of pediatric patients treated with cranial radiotherapy who subsequently developed intracranial meningiomas.
- Data collection included initial diagnosis, radiotherapy details (dose, field), latency period, subsequent treatments, and patient outcomes.
Main Results:
- Eighteen patients (9 male, 9 female) were identified.
- The majority received whole brain radiotherapy for leukemia prophylaxis.
- Six patients underwent repeat radiotherapy, with four experiencing no further adverse events and successful meningioma control over up to 17 years of follow-up.
Conclusions:
- Surgery remains a primary treatment option for RAM.
- Repeat radiotherapy can be a viable and beneficial treatment option for selected patients with RAM, offering good prospects for disease control.
