Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is more prevalent in psychiatric inpatients than the general population. Comorbid ADHD significantly impairs functioning in these patients, highlighting the need for screening and tailored treatments.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Psychiatry
- Clinical Psychology
Background:
- Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurocognitive disorder affecting 2.8% of adults.
- ADHD frequently co-occurs with other psychiatric disorders, exacerbating psychosocial difficulties.
- Limited research exists on ADHD prevalence and functional impact within inpatient psychiatric settings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine ADHD prevalence in acute care psychiatric inpatients.
- To compare quality of life and functioning between inpatients with and without ADHD.
- To investigate the impact of ADHD on functional impairment in this population.
Main Methods:
- Screening of 31 psychiatric inpatients using the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale.
- Full diagnostic assessment for ADHD in positive screeners.
- Assessment of functioning using the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale (WFIRS).
Main Results:
- ADHD prevalence was 36.4% (12 out of 31 patients), significantly higher than in the general population.
- Patients with ADHD exhibited significantly higher WFIRS scores, indicating decreased overall functioning.
- ADHD was associated with impairments in family, work, social functioning, life skills, self-concept, and increased risk-taking.
Conclusions:
- The prevalence of ADHD is substantially elevated in acute care psychiatric inpatients.
- Comorbid ADHD in psychiatric inpatients leads to greater functional impairment.
- Routine ADHD screening and patient-specific treatment are warranted in this population.
