Stream Function01:20

Stream Function

2.1K
In two-dimensional incompressible fluid flow, the continuity equation is essential for ensuring mass conservation, meaning that any change in fluid entering or exiting a region is balanced by a corresponding change elsewhere. For incompressible flow, where density remains constant, this requirement simplifies to the condition that the divergence of the velocity field must be zero. Mathematically, this is expressed as,

Encoding01:19

Encoding

884
Information enters the brain through encoding, which is the input of information into the memory system. Once sensory information is received from the environment, the brain labels or codes it. The information is then organized with similar information and connected to existing concepts. Encoding occurs through automatic processing and effortful processing.
Automatic processing involves the encoding of details like time, space, frequency, and the meaning of words, usually done without conscious...

Steady Flow of a Fluid Stream01:27

Steady Flow of a Fluid Stream

786
Consider a control volume, such as a pipe with solid boundaries, through which fluid flows and changes direction due to the impulse exerted by the resulting force from the pipe walls. In steady flow, the mass of fluid entering the control volume at a given time, t, with velocity v1, is equal to the mass leaving after infinitesimal time dt, with velocity v2.
During this process, the momentum of the fluid within the control volume remains constant over the time interval dt. By applying the...

Directing Effect of Substituents: meta-Directing Groups

6.1K
Substituents on the benzene ring that direct an incoming electrophile to undergo substitution at the meta position are called meta directors. All meta directors either have a positive charge on the atom directly bonded to the ring or a partial positive charge. These groups function by withdrawing electrons from the ring through inductive and resonance effects. Consider the carbocation intermediates formed upon the addition of an electrophile on nitrobenzene at the...

Directing Effect of Substituents: ortho–para-Directing Groups

8.7K
Ortho–para directors are substituent groups attached to the benzene ring and direct the addition of an electrophile to the positions ortho or para to the substituent. All electron-donating groups are considered ortho–para directors. They donate electrons to the ring and make the ring more electron-rich. The ring is therefore susceptible to the addition of electrophiles. Substituents such as amino, hydroxy, or alkoxy, containing lone pairs on the atom adjacent to the ring, donate...

Directional Terms01:14

Directional Terms

17.2K
Directional terms are essential for describing the relative locations of different body structures. For instance, an anatomist might describe one band of tissue as "inferior to" another, or a physician might describe a tumor as "superficial to" a deeper body structure. These terms often use comparative terms in pairs to trace out the relative locations of one body part to another or descriptions of body tissues like the deeper ones from superficially present with reference to...

Summary

This study challenges the idea that continuous magnitudes are more basic than number. Our research shows rapid, direct number perception, refuting claims that number is not a primitive concept.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Science
  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • The nature of number as a conceptual primitive is debated.
  • Prior work suggests number is a conceptual primitive, challenged by a recent article.
  • This article misrepresents research on numerosity perception.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To refute the claim that continuous magnitudes are more automatic and basic than numerosities.
  • To correct the misrepresentation of our work on numerosity perception.
  • To assert that number is a conceptual primitive.

Main Methods:

  • We analyze and critique the target article's dismissal of prior work.
  • We highlight our recent findings on rapid and direct encoding of numerosity.
  • Our evidence directly challenges the target article's central thesis.

Main Results:

  • Our research demonstrates rapid and direct encoding of numerosity.
  • This finding contradicts the assertion that continuous magnitudes are more fundamental than number.
  • The target article's thesis is undermined by evidence of direct numerical processing.

Conclusions:

  • Number perception is rapid and direct, supporting its status as a primitive concept.
  • The target article's claims regarding the primacy of continuous magnitudes are inaccurate.
  • Our work reaffirms the foundational role of numerosity in cognition.
