Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Natural Products

Background:

  • Sonneratia caseolaris is traditionally used in medicine.
  • The plant's potential medicinal properties require scientific validation.
  • Antioxidant compounds are crucial for combating oxidative stress.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the antioxidant activity of Sonneratia caseolaris extract.
  • To isolate and identify active antioxidant compounds from the plant.
  • To validate the traditional medicinal use of Sonneratia caseolaris.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction of Sonneratia caseolaris.
  • Antioxidant activity screening using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay on thin-layer chromatography (TLC).
  • Activity-guided isolation and structural elucidation of compounds.

Main Results:

  • The Sonneratia caseolaris extract exhibited notable antioxidant activity.
  • Two flavonoid compounds were successfully isolated: luteolin and luteolin 7-O-β-glucoside.
  • Both isolated flavonoids demonstrated significant DPPH radical scavenging effects.

Conclusions:

  • Sonneratia caseolaris possesses scientifically validated antioxidant properties.
  • Luteolin and luteolin 7-O-β-glucoside are key contributors to the plant's antioxidant capacity.
  • This study supports the traditional medicinal applications of Sonneratia caseolaris.
