An Argument for Self-Report as a Reference Standard in Audiology

Self-report is a valid reference standard for audiology diagnostic studies. The Hearing-in-Noise Test (HINT) shows higher accuracy than pure-tone thresholds for detecting speech-recognition-in-noise disorders in individuals with normal audiograms.
