We introduce Hedgehog Plots, a novel visualization for assessing visual field (VF) progression. This method combines Rate of Progression (RP) and Loss of Sight Years (LSY) to identify patients needing priority monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Medical Visualization
- Data Analysis
Background:
- Visual field (VF) defects are a key indicator of glaucoma and other neurological conditions.
- Accurate assessment of VF progression is crucial for timely intervention and patient management.
- Current methods for tracking VF changes can be complex and time-consuming for large patient cohorts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and demonstrate a new approach for assessing and visualizing visual field (VF) progression in clinical settings.
- To introduce novel summary measures and a visualization technique for improved VF analysis.
- To facilitate the identification of patients with significant VF progression requiring prioritized monitoring.
Main Methods:
- Calculated Rate of Progression (RP) per eye using linear regression of mean deviation (MD) against follow-up time.
- Introduced Loss of Sight Years (LSY), a novel parameter estimating future advanced bilateral VF loss based on actuarial data.
- Combined RP and LSY with a novel visualization technique called Hedgehog Plots for ranking and identifying 'priority' patients.
- Utilized data from 1263 VF records to illustrate the differences between RP and LSY in identifying priority cases.
Main Results:
- Hedgehog Plots enable visualization and assessment of RP for individual eyes within a clinic.
- RP and LSY provide distinct and complementary information regarding a patient's VF progression status.
- The ranking system based on RP and LSY effectively identifies 'priority' patients for closer monitoring.
- An interactive application demonstrating these techniques is publicly available.
Conclusions:
- Hedgehog Plots offer a valuable tool for visualizing VF progression in patient groups.
- This visualization technique can aid in prioritizing monitoring resources for patients with progressive VF loss.
- The study presents a novel visualization and interactive application for determining VF progression in large patient cohorts.
