  • A descriptive study design was employed.
  • 46 participants from Veterans Administration nursing homes were recruited.
  • Intrarater and interrater reliability were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and kappa statistics. Criterion-related validity was evaluated against the Seated Postural Control Measure for Adults.

Main Results:

  • High intrarater reliability (ICC = .995) was observed.
  • Good interrater reliability (ICC = .80) was found.
  • Criterion-related validity showed a wide range of kappa values (0.13 to 0.91), with total score ICC at .85.

Conclusions:

  • The Seated Posture Scale (SPS) exhibits adequate preliminary validity and reliability.
  • The SPS is suitable for measuring wheelchair-seated posture in research and clinical settings.
  • Future use by rehabilitation nurses may improve wheelchair posture management and clinical outcomes, especially for non-repositioning individuals.
