Nursing Assessment:Nursing management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) involves taking the patient's history, focusing on primary complaints such as chest pain, dyspnea, and excessive sweating (diaphoresis), as well as other symptoms like back or jaw pain, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, dizziness, and fatigue. The nurse also reviews the patient's history of cardiac events, risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, family history, and current medications. In the objective assessment,...

Ovaries01:26

Ovaries

2.6K
The ovaries are roughly the size of almonds and measure approximately 2 to 3 centimeters in length. These paired structures are situated within the pelvic region and are anchored by the mesovarium—a peritoneal extension that also connects them to the wider structure of the broad ligament. The support system extends to the suspensory ligament, housing blood and lymphatic vessels. In addition, the ovarian ligament tethers the ovaries to the uterus.
On the ovarian surface, a layer of...

Continuing Care01:25

Continuing Care

2.0K
Continuing care describes the variety of health, personal, and social services provided over a prolonged period. The need for continuing care is increasing because people are living longer. Many people do not have families or others to care for them. Continuing care is mainly for patients who are disabled, functionally dependent, or suffering from a terminal disease. It is available within institutional settings or in homes. Examples include nursing centers or facilities, assisted living,...

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Women's Health
    • Medical Education

    Background:

    • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent androgen-excess disorder often underdiagnosed in reproductive-aged women.
    • Rural nurse practitioners (NPs) require enhanced skills for diagnosing and managing PCOS.
    • This study addresses the need for improved PCOS knowledge among rural NPs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a continuing education program in enhancing NPs' knowledge of PCOS.
    • To assess the impact of targeted education on the diagnostic and management capabilities of rural NPs regarding PCOS.

    Main Methods:

    • A pretest-posttest design was employed to measure knowledge acquisition.
    • Participants (n=48) completed a pretest before a PCOS continuing education presentation.
    • An identical posttest was completed by 43 participants; results were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance.

    Main Results:

    • Initial pretest scores revealed low levels of NP knowledge in PCOS assessment, diagnosis, and management.
    • Posttest results indicated statistically significant improvements (p = .000) in all assessed areas following the education program.

    Conclusions:

    • Continuing education is a viable strategy to increase rural NPs' knowledge of PCOS.
    • Enhanced NP knowledge can facilitate evidence-based care for rural women diagnosed with PCOS.
