Few obesity reduction programs exist in the Pacific. This study developed a culturally relevant Fit Kit Palau© program using community-based participatory research (CBPR) to address local needs for healthier eating and increased physical activity.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Community Health
- Pacific Island Health
Background:
- Evidence-based obesity reduction programs are critically lacking in Pacific Island nations.
- Existing health initiatives often fail to address unique cultural contexts and community needs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a culturally relevant obesity reduction program for a Pacific Island nation using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) model.
- To identify specific needs and preferences of the local population regarding weight management, healthy eating, and physical activity.
Main Methods:
- A collaboration was established between a university and a Pacific Island nation.
- An advisory council of local stakeholders was formed, followed by an extensive needs assessment involving youth, parents, professionals, and the public.
- Data collection focused on current health behaviors, dietary patterns, and desired interventions for weight management.
Main Results:
- Only 9% of participants had previously attempted a weight loss program.
- Identified challenges included binge-eating cycles, limited healthy food options at community events, and few traditions promoting physical activity.
- Participant-desired interventions focused on increasing physical activity, making healthier food choices, and self-reward for healthy behaviors.
- Dietary analysis revealed high consumption of energy-dense, protein, starchy, sugary, and fried foods, with infrequent intake of fruits and vegetables.
Conclusions:
- The culturally relevant Fit Kit Palau© program was co-created based on identified community needs and preferences.
- Key lessons were learned regarding partnership development, managing cultural and geographic barriers, capacity building, and balancing program fidelity with cultural responsiveness.
- The program aims to improve access, engagement, and adherence, serving as a model for other Pacific Island countries facing similar public health challenges.
