What is Evolutionary History?02:35

What is Evolutionary History?

43.7K
Scientists record evolutionary history by analyzing fossil, morphological, and genetic data. The fossil record documents the history of life on Earth and provides evidence for evolution. However, both fossil and living organisms offer evidence that outlines Earth’s evolutionary history.

Evolutionary Psychology

1.0K
Evolutionary psychology explores the origins of human behavior and mental processes by framing them within the context of natural selection, a theory famously propounded by Charles Darwin. This field asserts that many behaviors common across human societies — ranging from instinctive fear reactions to complex social interactions — arose as evolutionary adaptations. These adaptations enhanced the survival and reproductive success of our ancestors, thereby becoming embedded in the...

Criticisms of the Evolutionary Perspective

In a study where individuals posing as strangers offered compliments and proposed casual sex to students, the responses differed significantly based on gender. Not a single woman accepted the proposal, while 70% of the men agreed. This outcome provides a useful scenario to explore through the lens of evolutionary psychology and social learning theory, highlighting the diverse perspectives on human sexual behaviors.
Evolutionary psychology provides one explanation for these findings, suggesting...

Evolutionary Relationships through Genome Comparisons

7.1K
Genome comparison is one of the excellent ways to interpret the evolutionary relationships between organisms. The basic principle of genome comparison is that if two species share a common feature, it is likely encoded by the DNA sequence conserved between both species. The advent of genome sequencing technologies in the late 20th century enabled scientists to understand the concept of conservation of domains between species and helped them to deduce evolutionary relationships across diverse...

Dehydration Synthesis01:15

Dehydration Synthesis

150.5K
Overview
Dehydration synthesis (also called a condensation reaction) is the chemical process in which two molecules covalently link together to form a new molecule, along with the release of a water molecule. Many physiologically important compounds form by dehydration synthesis reactions, such as complex carbohydrates, proteins, DNA, and RNA.
Synthesis of carbohydrates
Sugar molecules are covalently linked together by dehydration synthesis. During the reaction, the hydroxyl (-OH) group from...

Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions02:17

Synthesis and Decomposition Reactions

38.3K
Synthesis and decomposition are two types of redox reactions. Synthesis means to make something, whereas decomposition means to break something. The reactions are accompanied by chemical and energy changes.

Summary

This essay argues that the extended evolutionary synthesis (EES) requires a complete overhaul, not just revision. It proposes a new evolutionary framework integrating organismic-systems biology and cosmic evolution for a non-reductionist approach.

Area of Science:

  • Evolutionary Biology
  • Philosophy of Science
  • Systems Theory

Background:

  • Critiques of the neo-Darwinian paradigm and the extended evolutionary synthesis (EES).
  • Identifies positivist assumptions within current evolutionary frameworks.
  • Highlights limitations of merely revising or extending existing paradigms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a fundamental reevaluation of evolutionary theory.
  • To introduce a new philosophical and scientific framework for evolutionary synthesis.
  • To address intellectual limitations in current evolutionary biology.

Main Methods:

  • Historiographical review of evolutionary paradigms.
  • Application of the López Ontological Demarcation Design (LODD) principle.

  • Integration of Organismic-Systems Biology (OSB) and cosmic evolution (CE).
  • Main Results:

    • Identifies deep-seated positivist issues in neo-Darwinism and EES.
    • Demonstrates that minor revisions to EES are insufficient.
    • Outlines a novel, multidisciplinary evolutionary synthesis.

    Conclusions:

    • A complete overhaul of evolutionary theory is necessary.
    • The proposed framework offers a non-reductionist, multidisciplinary alternative.
    • Further research is needed to develop and evaluate this new synthesis.
