Summary

Genetic variations in MMP3, CD28, and VDR are linked to initial periodontitis in Finnish adolescents. Smoking habits did not influence these associations, suggesting a genetic predisposition to early gum disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between salivary pro- and anti-inflammatory mediator gene polymorphisms and initial periodontitis in Finnish adolescents.
  • To assess the influence of smoking on these genetic associations.

Main Methods:

  • Salivary DNA was collected from 93 Finnish adolescents.
  • Oral health parameters including periodontal probing depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were recorded.
  • Genotyping was performed for selected gene polymorphisms, including MMP3, CD28, and VDR.

Main Results:

  • Polymorphisms in MMP3, CD28, and VDR genes were significantly associated with deepened periodontal pockets (FDR q < 0.05).
  • These associations remained significant after controlling for smoking.
  • No significant effect of smoking was observed on the studied genetic associations.

Conclusions:

  • Genetic polymorphisms in MMP3, CD28, and VDR appear to be linked to the development of initial periodontitis.
  • These findings suggest a genetic predisposition to early periodontitis, independent of smoking status.
