Methanogens, including Methanobrevibacter oralis, are common in the oral cavity and do not show increased prevalence in peri-implantitis compared to healthy sites. These findings suggest methanogens are part of normal oral flora, not specific pathogens in peri-implantitis.
Area of Science:
- Oral microbiology
- Periodontal disease research
- Implant dentistry
Background:
- Methanogens are known to be present in periodontitis.
- Their role in peri-implantitis, an inflammation around dental implants, is not well understood.
- This study investigates the presence and prevalence of methanogens in peri-implantitis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if methanogens are more prevalent in peri-implantitis lesions compared to healthy peri-implant sites.
- To identify specific methanogen species associated with peri-implantitis.
- To assess the potential pathogenic role of methanogens in peri-implantitis.
Main Methods:
- Collected 30 peri-implantitis and 28 control samples from 28 patients.
- Utilized PCR-sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene for broad screening.
- Employed real-time quantitative PCR targeting mcrA genes for confirmation and load assessment.
Main Results:
- Methanogen communities, primarily Methanobrevibacter oralis, were detected in 51% of samples.
- Prevalence of Methanobrevibacter oralis and Methanobrevibacter massiliense did not significantly differ between peri-implantitis and control groups.
- Methanogen load also showed no significant difference between diseased and healthy sites.
Conclusions:
- The prevalence and load of methanogens are similar in peri-implantitis lesions and healthy peri-implant sites.
- Methanogens are likely part of the normal commensal flora of the oral cavity.
- Current data do not support a specific pathogenic role for methanogens in peri-implantitis.

Introduction to Documentation and Reporting
Nursing documentation records essential information and details regarding a patient's care and treatment in written or electronic form. It is a critical aspect of nursing practice that involves documenting assessments, interventions, outcomes, and other relevant details about a patient's health status.
Documentation maps the patient's health journey by creating a comprehensive...
