  • To evaluate trends in red blood cell (RBC), platelet, and plasma transfusions.
  • To analyze transfusion patterns at three Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospitals from 2000 to 2010.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 176,521 hospitalizations in 69,621 patients.
  • Data collected from three VHA hospitals between 2000 and 2010.

Main Results:

  • Overall transfusion use declined for surgical hospitalizations but remained stable for medical hospitalizations.
  • A reduction in multi-unit RBC transfusions and an increase in single-unit RBC transfusions were observed.
  • Transfusion utilization increased in medical patients admitted for infection.
