Reconstruction of Signal using Interpolation01:10

Reconstruction of Signal using Interpolation

734
Signal processing techniques are essential for accurately converting continuous signals to digital formats and vice versa. When a continuous signal is sampled with a period T, the resulting sampled signal exhibits replicas of the original spectrum in the frequency domain, spaced at intervals equal to the sampling frequency. To handle this sampled signal, a zero-order hold method can be applied, which creates a piecewise constant signal by retaining each sample's value until the next...

Electron Microscope Tomography and Single-particle Reconstruction

2.9K
Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) can be used to determine the 3D structure of biological samples with the help of techniques such as electron microscope tomography and single-particle reconstruction. While single-particle reconstruction can examine macromolecules and macromolecular complexes in vitro conditions only, tomography permits the study of cell components or small cells in vivo.
Electron Tomography
Electron tomography can be performed either in TEM or STEM (scanning transmission...

Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

5.8K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Social Exchange Theory02:06

Social Exchange Theory

40.8K
We have discussed why we form relationships, what attracts us to others, and different types of love. But what determines whether we are satisfied with and stay in a relationship? One theory that provides an explanation is social exchange theory. According to social exchange theory, we act as naïve economists in keeping a tally of the ratio of costs and benefits of forming and maintaining a relationship with others (Rusbult & Van Lange, 2003).

What is Evolutionary History?02:35

What is Evolutionary History?

43.6K
Scientists record evolutionary history by analyzing fossil, morphological, and genetic data. The fossil record documents the history of life on Earth and provides evidence for evolution. However, both fossil and living organisms offer evidence that outlines Earth’s evolutionary history.

Summary

This case study shows that delayed oral cavity reconstruction using a microvascular free flap is a feasible option for patients experiencing severe speech and swallowing difficulties after cancer treatment. Functional rehabilitation outcomes can be satisfactory.

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Oncology Rehabilitation

Background:

  • Patients undergoing oral cancer treatment often experience significant functional deficits, including difficulties with eating and speaking.
  • Delayed reconstruction is sometimes necessary due to the complexities of oncologic treatment and patient recovery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of delayed oral cavity reconstruction using an anterolateral thigh flap.
  • To evaluate the functional outcomes of speech and swallowing after reconstruction in a patient with a history of oral cancer.

Main Methods:

  • A 49-year-old patient with a large oral cavity defect, two years post-surgery and chemo-radiotherapy, underwent reconstruction.
  • An anterolateral thigh flap was used for the microvascular free flap reconstruction.
  • Post-reconstruction swallowing and speech assessments were performed.

Main Results:

  • The patient experienced significant improvements in swallowing function, with no signs of aspiration.
  • Speech intelligibility and understandability showed marked improvement after the reconstruction.
  • The functional rehabilitation intent of the delayed reconstruction yielded satisfactory outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • Delayed microvascular free flap reconstruction for oral cavity defects is a viable surgical option.
  • This approach can lead to significant functional improvements in speech and swallowing for patients previously unable to eat orally.
