Transfer Function in Control Systems01:21

Transfer Function in Control Systems

1.6K
The transfer function is a fundamental concept in the analysis and design of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. It offers a concise way to understand how a system responds to different inputs in the frequency domain. It serves as a bridge between the time-domain differential equations that describe system dynamics and the frequency-domain representation that facilitates easier manipulation and analysis.
To derive the transfer function, consider a general nth-order linear time-invariant...

Clinical Trials: Overview

5.0K
Clinical development focuses on how the drug will interact with the human body and encompasses four key phases of clinical trials, each serving a specific purpose in assessing the safety and effectiveness of new drugs. These phases overlap and build upon one another. Phase I involves a small group of healthy volunteers (typically 20-80 individuals) or, in cases where significant toxicity is expected, patients with the targeted disease, such as cancer or AIDS. The volunteers are tested for...

Trial and Error and Algorithm01:12

Trial and Error and Algorithm

424
A problem-solving strategy is a plan of action used to find a solution. Different strategies have distinct action plans. Trial and error involves trying different solutions until one works. For instance, to fix a broken printer, you might check ink levels, ensure the paper tray isn't jammed, and verify the printer's connection to your laptop. This method can be time-consuming but is commonly used. Thomas Edison, for example, used trial and error to find a suitable filament for the light...

Clinical Trials

10.7K
Clinical trials are prospective experimental studies conducted on humans to determine the safety and efficacy of treatments, drugs, diet methods, and medical devices. Using statistics in clinical trials enables researchers to derive reasonable and accurate conclusions from the collected data, allowing them to make wise decisions in uncertain situations. In medical research, statistical methods are crucial for preventing errors and bias.
There are four phases in a clinical trial. A phase one...

Random Error01:04

Random Error

9.8K
Random or indeterminate errors originate from various uncontrollable variables, such as variations in environmental conditions, instrument imperfections, or the inherent variability of the phenomena being measured. Usually, these errors cannot be predicted, estimated, or characterized because their direction and magnitude often vary in magnitude and direction even during consecutive measurements. As a result, they are difficult to eliminate. However, the aggregate effect of these errors can be...

Random Variables01:09

Random Variables

17.9K
A random variable is a single numerical value that indicates the outcome of a procedure. The concept of random variables is fundamental to the probability theory and was introduced by a Russian mathematician, Pafnuty Chebyshev, in the mid-nineteenth century.
Uppercase letters such as X or Y denote a random variable. Lowercase letters like x or y denote the value of a random variable. If X is a random variable, then X is written in words, and x is given as a number.
For example, let X = the...

Summary

The Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention program significantly improved oral motor skills and weight gain in preterm infants. This intervention also reduced the time needed to transition from gavage to full independent spoon feeding.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatology
  • Pediatric Nutrition
  • Developmental Pediatrics

Background:

  • Preterm infants often experience challenges with oral feeding due to immature oro-motor function.
  • Early intervention is crucial for optimizing feeding outcomes and growth in vulnerable preterm populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of the Premature Infant Oral Motor Intervention (PIOMI) program on oro-motor function.
  • To assess the effect of PIOMI on the time to achieve full independent spoon feeding in preterm infants.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial involving 30 preterm infants (28-32 weeks gestation) receiving gavage feeds.
  • Infants were assigned to either structured oro-motor stimulation (PIOMI) or unstructured sham intervention before feeds.
  • Oro-motor function was assessed using the Neonatal Oro-Motor Assessment Scale (NOMAS).

Main Results:

  • The PIOMI group showed significantly greater improvement in NOMAS scores over 7 days compared to the control group (9.25 vs 4.79, P=0.001).
  • Infants in the PIOMI group achieved full independent spoon feeding significantly faster (4.0 days) than controls (6.64 days, P=0.001).
  • The study group exhibited a significant increase in weight gain post-enrollment compared to the control group.

Conclusions:

  • Structured oral stimulation, as delivered by the PIOMI program, enhances oro-motor skills in preterm infants (28-32 weeks gestation).
  • The intervention effectively accelerates the transition from gavage feeding to full oral feeding.
  • PIOMI positively influences growth velocity and overall feeding development in this population.
