Prickly heat, or miliaria crystallina, is a skin condition caused by blocked sweat ducts. This case highlights its spontaneous resolution in a diabetic patient recovering from a severe infection.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Internal Medicine
Background:
- Prickly heat (miliaria) results from sweat duct obstruction.
- It manifests differently based on obstruction depth: superficial (crystallina), mid-epidermal (rubra), or deeper (profunda).
Observation:
- A 70-year-old diabetic female in intensive care presented with diffuse, firm, clear vesicular lesions.
- These lesions suggested miliaria crystallina, a form of prickly heat.
Findings:
- Miliaria crystallina is linked to sweat retention from stratum corneum obstruction.
- The patient's condition resolved spontaneously with fever regression.
Implications:
- This case illustrates a typical presentation and benign course of miliaria crystallina.
- Understanding sweat duct obstruction levels aids in diagnosing various miliaria types.
