Ureteroscopy for ureterolithiasis is effective, but late complications like vesicoureteral reflux and ureteric stricture can occur. Stone size and density, especially in the lower ureter and above 1000 HU, increase complication risk.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Endourology
- Nephrology
Background:
- Ureteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure for ureterolithiasis.
- Contact lithotripsy is often used with ureteroscopy.
- Understanding late postoperative complications is crucial for patient outcomes.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the causes and characteristics of late postoperative complications after ureteroscopy with contact lithotripsy.
- To identify risk factors associated with these complications.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 1372 patients undergoing ureteroscopy with contact lithotripsy or lithoextraction.
- Evaluation of complication rates, types, stone characteristics (size, location, density), and patient outcomes.
Main Results:
- A 6.9% complication rate (96/1372 patients) was observed.
- Vesicoureteral reflux (84.4%) and ureteric stricture (15.6%) were the primary late complications.
- Complications were more frequent with lower ureter stones ≥1.0 cm and stones with density ≥1000 HU.
Conclusions:
- While ureteroscopy is generally safe, late complications can occur.
- Stone size and location, along with stone density, are significant risk factors for postoperative complications.
- Further research may focus on preventative strategies for high-risk patients.
