Cohesion01:07

Cohesion

59.3K
Cohesion is the attraction between molecules of the same type, such as water molecules. Water molecules have an overall neutral charge but are polar molecule. An oxygen atom in one water molecule has a partial negative charge that can bind to a hydrogen atom with a partial positive charge in a second water molecule, forming a hydrogen bond. Each water molecule can form up to four hydrogen bonds with other water molecules. Hydrogen bonds are responsible for water's cohesive nature.

Seed Structure and Early Development of the Sporophyte

31.1K
Seed structures are composed of a protective seed coat surrounding a plant embryo, and a food store for the developing embryo. The embryo contains the precursor tissues for leaves, stem, and roots. The endosperm and cotyledons—seed leaves—act as the food reserves for the growing embryo.

Osmosis and Osmotic Pressure of Solutions

46.6K
A number of natural and synthetic materials exhibit selective permeation, meaning that only molecules or ions of a certain size, shape, polarity, charge, and so forth, are capable of passing through (permeating) the material. Biological cell membranes provide elegant examples of selective permeation in nature, while dialysis tubing used to remove metabolic wastes from blood is a more simplistic technological example. Regardless of how they may be fabricated, these materials are generally...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • A 27-year-old male presented with a few weeks of episodic acute headaches and nausea.
  • Initial neurological examination revealed no abnormalities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the underlying cause of acute, episodic headaches and nausea in a young adult with a normal neurological exam.

Main Methods:

  • Case report presentation.
  • Review of patient's symptoms and clinical presentation.

Main Results:

  • The patient's symptoms of acute headaches and nausea were episodic.
  • Normal neurological findings on initial examination.

Conclusions:

  • Further diagnostic workup is warranted to identify the etiology of the patient's symptoms.
  • The differential diagnosis for acute headaches and nausea in young adults requires consideration of various neurological and non-neurological causes.
