Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

13.3K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Beats

1.4K
The study of music provides many examples of the superposition of waves and the constructive and destructive interference that occurs. Very few examples of music being performed consist of a single source playing a single frequency for an extended period of time. A single frequency of sound for an extended period might be monotonous to the point of irritation, similar to the unwanted drone of an aircraft engine or a loud fan. Music is pleasant and exciting due to mixing the changing frequencies...

The Representativeness Heuristic02:13

The Representativeness Heuristic

16.8K
The representative heuristic describes a biased way of thinking, in which you unintentionally stereotype someone or something. For example, you may assume that your professors spend their free time reading books and engaging in intellectual conversation, because the idea of them spending their time playing volleyball or visiting an amusement park does not fit in with your stereotypes of professors.

National Nursing Organizations I01:26

National Nursing Organizations I

3.1K
Nursing organizations assume a significant role in consistently developing the nursing profession through education, research studies, establishing practice standards, and reforming health policies. Typically, nursing organizations operate at the regional, national, and international levels. For example, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) represents more than 28 million nurses worldwide. In contrast, the American Nurses Association (ANA) is a membership organization representing nurses...

National Nursing Organizations II

2.1K
Nursing organizations play a vital role in representing nurses working in specialized clinical settings, such as the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).
The AACN emphasizes a healthy work environment through six standards to achieve an optimal patient outcome. The standards are appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, collaboration, authentic leadership, effective communication, and decision-making. In addition, AACN provides certification programs, webinars, journals, and...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

528
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Public Health
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Depressive symptoms are a significant concern for older adults.
  • The role of online communication technologies in mental health is increasingly relevant.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the use of specific online communication technologies and subsequent depressive symptoms in older adults.
  • To differentiate the impact of various communication platforms on mental well-being.

Main Methods:

  • A nationally representative, population-based prospective cohort study.
  • Utilized data from the 2012 and 2014 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS).
  • Examined associations between 2012 use of email, social networks, video chat, and instant messaging and depressive symptoms at two-year follow-up in 1,424 older adults.

Main Results:

  • Video chat users (e.g., Skype) showed approximately half the probability of depressive symptoms compared to non-users or email-only users.
  • No significant association was found between the use of email, social media, or instant messaging and a lower risk of depression.
  • 17.9% of participants used video chat, while 39.6% used no communication technologies and 22.1% used email only.

Conclusions:

  • Older adults who engage in video chat demonstrate a lower risk of developing depression.
  • The protective effect on depression appears specific to video chat, not other common online communication technologies.
  • Findings suggest video communication may play a beneficial role in mitigating depression risk among the elderly.
