Adding exercise early in a weight loss program significantly enhances weight reduction and maintenance. Combining intensified behavioral modification with early circuit weight training yields the best results for obese individuals.
Area of Science:
- Obesity research
- Exercise physiology
- Metabolic health
Background:
- Obesity is a significant public health concern requiring effective long-term management strategies.
- Weight loss interventions often struggle with long-term maintenance.
- The role of exercise timing in conjunction with behavioral modification needs further elucidation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of exercise intervention added to weight loss treatment at different time points for weight loss and maintenance.
- To compare the effects of early versus delayed exercise integration on metabolic parameters.
Main Methods:
- 120 obese subjects (BMI > 30) were randomized into four groups: intensified behavioral modification (iBM), behavioral modification + early exercise (CWT1: 0-3 months), behavioral modification + delayed exercise (CWT2: 6-9 months), and a control group (CON).
- Measurements included weight, waist circumference, and glucose tolerance tests over 24 months.
- Eighty-five subjects completed the trial.
Main Results:
- Circuit weight training group 1 (CWT1) achieved the most significant weight loss (-8.5 kg) and waist circumference reduction (-11.5 cm at 9 months, -8.8 cm at 24 months).
- Intensified behavioral modification (iBM) and CWT2 also showed significant weight loss.
- Intervention groups demonstrated improvements in insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance compared to the control group.
Conclusions:
- An intensive start combining behavioral modification and circuit weight training from the beginning of the weight loss period is the most effective regimen.
- Treatment for morbid obesity should prioritize an early, integrated approach of exercise and diet.
