Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of wearing red- or blue-lensed glasses on YoYo intermittent endurance exercise test 2 (YoYoIE2) performance and blood testosterone levels.
  • To analyze the influence of colored lenses on heart rate recovery, perceived exertion, and blood lactate concentration post-exercise.

Main Methods:

  • Ten soccer players completed three YoYoIE2 sessions in a counterbalanced crossover design.
  • Participants wore colorless (control), blue-lensed, or red-lensed glasses during each session, with 2-4 days of rest between trials.
  • Blood samples were collected to measure testosterone concentration, and heart rate, perceived exertion, and blood lactate were recorded.

Main Results:

  • YoYoIE2 performance metrics did not significantly differ across the three conditions (p >0.05).
  • Post-exercise blood testosterone levels increased by 14% in the red-lenses condition compared to baseline (effect size=0.75).
  • Faster heart rate recovery at 1 minute post-test was observed with blue lenses compared to red lenses (p <0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Wearing red-colored lenses during high-intensity intermittent exercise can elevate testosterone concentration.
  • Colored lenses, specifically red, do not appear to influence YoYoIE2 performance in soccer players.
  • Blue lenses may offer a benefit in accelerating heart rate recovery following intense exercise.
