First Report of Beet soilborne virus in Poland

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) and Beet soilborne virus (BSBV) were detected in Polish sugar beet fields for the first time. This discovery highlights the need for monitoring these plant viruses in Poland to protect sugar beet crops.

- Sequencing confirmed high nucleotide identity (98%) of the Polish BNYVV isolate with a German isolate and the Polish BSBV isolate with a German isolate (98% nucleotide, 98% amino acid).
- BSBV was detected in 12 out of 15 tested sugar beet plants, and BNYVV in nine, confirming widespread presence.
Conclusions:
- This study provides the first documented evidence of Beet soilborne virus (BSBV) in Poland.
- The findings confirm the co-occurrence of BNYVV and BSBV in Polish sugar beet fields.
- Regular monitoring for these viruses is crucial for effective management of sugar beet diseases in Poland.
