Sign Test for Matched Pairs01:17

Sign Test for Matched Pairs

400
The sign test for matched pairs offers a robust method for comparing two paired samples, often for the effects of an intervention in one of them. This method is very useful in situations where the underlying distribution of the data is unknown. The test compares two related samples—often pre- and post-treatment measurements on the same subjects—to determine if there are significant differences in their median values.
To conduct the sign test, we first calculate the differences in...

Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks Test for Matched Pairs

488
The Wilcoxon signed-rank test for matched pairs evaluates the null hypothesis by combining the ranks of differences with their signs. It essentially tests whether the median of the differences in a population of matched pairs is zero. Since the test incorporates more information than the sign test, it generally yields more trustable conclusions. This test also does not require the data to follow a normal distribution, but two conditions must be met for it to be applicable: (1) the data must...

Imaging Studies I: Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder Studies

335
Kidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) StudiesKidney, Ureter, and Bladder (KUB) studies are standard diagnostic imaging procedures used to assess the anatomy of the urinary system. They are commonly utilized for patients experiencing abdominal pain or urinary symptoms. By using a simple X-ray of the abdomen, KUB studies can reveal structural and pathological abnormalities within the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. These studies are particularly valuable in diagnosing kidney stones, urinary...

Longitudinal Studies01:26

Longitudinal Studies

498
Longitudinal studies are also widely used in other medical and social science fields. For instance, in cardiovascular research, they can monitor patients' health over decades to identify risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol or smoking, and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of preventive measures. Similarly, in mental health studies, researchers might follow individuals from adolescence into adulthood to understand the development and progression of conditions like...

Observational Studies01:11

Observational Studies

11.0K
Observational studies are a type of analytical study where researchers observe events without any interventions. In other words, the researcher does not influence the response variable or the experiment's outcome.
There are three types of observational studies – Prospective, retrospective, and cross-sectional.
Prospective Study
Prospective studies, also known as longitudinal or cohort studies, are carried out by collecting future data from groups sharing similar characteristics. One...

Summary

Day-case laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is feasible and cost-effective for selected patients, showing no increase in complications. This approach reduces healthcare costs without compromising patient safety or outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Bariatric Surgery
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Health Economics

Background:

  • Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) feasibility as day-case surgery (DCS) is not widely demonstrated.
  • Few studies have explored the clinical and economic impact of SG performed as DCS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the outcomes and healthcare costs of SG performed as DCS versus inpatient procedures.
  • To evaluate the safety and cost-effectiveness of day-case sleeve gastrectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, nonrandomized study of 250 patients undergoing day-case SG, each paired with an inpatient SG control.
  • Comparison of clinical outcomes, postoperative complications, readmissions, and healthcare costs between DCS and inpatient groups.

Main Results:

  • Day-case SG showed no significant difference in postoperative complications compared to inpatient SG.
  • Readmission rates were slightly higher in the DCS group, but rehospitalization duration was shorter.
  • Overall healthcare costs and cost per patient were significantly lower for day-case SG.

Conclusions:

  • Day-case SG in selected patients is a safe and feasible option, not associated with increased morbidity or mortality.
  • This approach is cost-effective due to efficient management of postoperative complications.
  • Day-case SG offers a viable alternative to inpatient procedures, reducing healthcare expenditure.
