Base Excision Repair01:54

Base Excision Repair

26.3K
One of the common DNA damages is the chemical alteration of single bases by alkylation, oxidation, or deamination. The altered bases cause mispairing and strand breakage during replication. This type of damage causes minimal change to the DNA double helix structure and can be repaired by the base excision repair (BER) pathways. BER corrects damaged DNA sequences by removing the damaged base and restoring the original base sequence using the complementary strand as a template.

DNA Distortion and Damage
Cells are regularly exposed to mutagens—factors in the environment that can damage DNA and generate mutations. UV radiation is one of the most common mutagens and is estimated to introduce a significant number of changes in DNA. These include bends or kinks in the structure, which can block DNA replication or transcription. If these errors are not fixed, the damage can cause mutations, which in turn can result in cancer or disease depending on which sequences are...

Measurement: Standard Units

79.2K
Every measurement provides three kinds of information: the size or magnitude of the measurement (a number), a standard of comparison for the measurement (a unit), and an indication of the uncertainty of the measurement. While the number and unit are explicitly represented when a quantity is written, the uncertainty is an aspect of the errors in the measurement results.

Measurement: Derived Units

55.1K
The International System of Units or SI system, by international agreement, has fixed measurement units for seven fundamental properties: length, mass, time, temperature, electric current, amount of substance, and luminosity. These are called the SI base units.

Summary

Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a hair transplantation technique using small punches for harvesting. Advancements in tools and techniques have improved its safety and efficiency.

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Dermatology
  • Hair Restoration Science

Background:

  • Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a primary method for harvesting hair follicles in transplantation.
  • Historically, hair transplantation began in 1937, with FUE evolving significantly since 2002.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide a comprehensive overview of Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) in hair transplantation.
  • To highlight the evolution of FUE techniques and instrumentation.

Main Methods:

  • Review of historical and modern FUE techniques, including manual, motorized, and robotic devices.
  • Discussion of punch types, anesthesia, and donor sites used in FUE procedures.

Main Results:

  • FUE involves harvesting hair follicles using circular punches, with advancements from manual to robotic systems.
