    Background:

    • The role of environmental factors in cellular growth and reproduction is a key area of biological research.
    • Ciliated protozoans, such as Tetrahymena pyriformis, are widely used model organisms for studying fundamental biological processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the necessity of ionizing radiation for achieving the maximum growth rate in Tetrahymena pyriformis.
    • To quantify the impact of varying ionizing radiation levels on the reproduction rate of this ciliated protozoan.

    Main Methods:

    • Tetrahymena pyriformis cultures were exposed to different levels of ionizing radiation, including near-ambient (0.5 and 1.8 mrad/day) and reduced (0.15 mrad/day) levels.
    • Reproduction rates were measured and statistically analyzed (P < 0.01) to determine the effect of radiation exposure.
