Color-word contingency learning shows that people learn associations between words and colors. This study demonstrates both semantic and response learning occur, even incidentally, impacting how we perceive color-word relationships.

  • To investigate whether semantic and response associations are learned independently in a color-word contingency learning paradigm.
  • To disentangle the contributions of semantic and response learning by manipulating word-color and word-button associations separately.

  • Four experiments were conducted over four daily sessions using pseudowords probabilistically associated with specific colors or response-button positions.
  • A novel paradigm manipulated word-color and word-button associations independently, including neutral trials and varying participants' awareness of contingencies.
