1California State University, East Bay, United States of America.
Veteran nursing students with higher pre-admission science GPAs achieved better graduation GPAs. While not predicting graduation or licensing exam rates, all veterans ultimately passed the NCLEX-RN, highlighting their resilience.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Education
- Higher Education
- Veterans Affairs
Background:
- Support for veterans in nursing programs is a national priority.
- Existing research on nursing program success often overlooks veteran-specific predictors.
- Limited data exists on factors influencing veteran student achievement in nursing.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify predictors of success for veterans in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
- To examine the relationship between admission criteria (GPA, TEAS) and veteran student outcomes.
- To compare veteran and non-veteran student success metrics.
Main Methods:
- Examined success in a university BSN program for veteran students.
- Measured outcomes: nursing GPA, graduation rate, NCLEX-RN pass rate.
- Assessed predictors: pre-admission GPA and Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) scores.
Main Results:
- Higher pre-admit science GPAs (≥3.41) predicted higher nursing GPAs for veterans.
- TEAS scores did not predict any measured outcomes for veteran students.
- Veteran and non-veteran students had similar graduation and NCLEX-RN pass rates; veterans had slightly lower average nursing GPAs.
- 100% of veteran participants passed the NCLEX-RN, including retakes, suggesting resilience.
Conclusions:
- Pre-admission science GPA may be a relevant factor for veteran nursing student success.
- Further research is needed on specific admission criteria and success factors for veterans in nursing programs.
- Veterans contribute valuable diversity and demonstrate resilience in nursing education.
