Two-dimensional Indium Selenide (InSe) nanosheets show promise as a near-infrared-II (NIR-II) responsive nanoplatform for cancer therapy. They efficiently deliver drugs and combine chemotherapy with photothermal therapy for enhanced cancer cell killing.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- The near-infrared-II (NIR-II) biowindow offers advantages over NIR-I due to higher maximum permissible exposure.
- Developing NIR-II responsive nanoplatforms for drug delivery is crucial for advanced cancer therapeutics.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate two-dimensional Indium Selenide (InSe) nanosheets, modified with poly(ethylene glycol), as a NIR-II responsive nanoplatform for cancer treatment.
- To investigate the photothermal properties, drug loading and release capabilities, and therapeutic efficacy of InSe nanosheets.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of two-dimensional InSe nanosheets via liquid exfoliation.
- Modification of InSe nanosheets with poly(ethylene glycol).
- Assessment of photothermal conversion efficiency, photothermal stability, doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity, and NIR-II-responsive DOX release.
- In vitro evaluation of synergistic chemo/photothermal effects on cancer cells.
Main Results:
- InSe nanosheets exhibited a high NIR-II responsive photothermal conversion efficiency of 39.5% and good photothermal stability.
- Achieved a high doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity of 93.6% with excellent NIR-II responsive release.
- Demonstrated superior synergistic chemo/photothermal effects in killing cancer cells in vitro.
- Showcased good biocompatibility of the InSe nanosheets.
Conclusions:
- Polyethylene glycol-modified InSe nanosheets are effective NIR-II responsive nanoplatforms for cancer therapy.
- The synergistic chemo/photothermal therapy approach using InSe NSs shows significant potential for therapeutic applications.
- InSe nanosheets possess favorable properties for future development in cancer treatment strategies.
