Two novel compounds, polyphthaliside A and B, and polyisocoumarin were isolated from Polygonum cuspidatum. These natural products showed no significant cytotoxicity or protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B inhibitory activity in preliminary tests.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Medicinal Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Polygonum cuspidatum is a plant source of bioactive compounds.
- Isobenzofuranone and isocoumarin derivatives are classes of natural products with diverse biological activities.
- Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) is a target for metabolic diseases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new chemical entities from Polygonum cuspidatum.
- To evaluate the cytotoxicity and PTP1B inhibitory potential of the isolated compounds.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation via comprehensive spectroscopic analysis (NMR, MS) and chemical methods.
- In vitro assays for cytotoxicity and PTP1B inhibition.
Main Results:
- Three new compounds were identified: polyphthaliside A (1), polyphthaliside B (2), and polyisocoumarin (3).
- None of the isolated compounds (1-3) demonstrated significant cytotoxicity.
- Compounds 1-3 exhibited no inhibitory activity against PTP1B at a concentration of 10 μM.
Conclusions:
- The study reports the discovery of novel isobenzofuranone and isocoumarin derivatives from Polygonum cuspidatum.
- The evaluated compounds lack notable cytotoxic or PTP1B inhibitory effects at the tested concentration, suggesting limited therapeutic potential in these specific activities.

Structure and Nomenclature of Alcohols and Phenols
Alcohols are one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry. The name of alcohol comes from the hydrocarbon from which it is derived. Alcohols are organic molecules containing the functional hydroxyl or –OH group directly bonded to carbon. Phenols have an OH group directly attached to a benzene ring. While alcohols are colorless, phenol is a white crystalline compound with a characteristic "hospital smell" odor.
As with other organic compounds, alcohols and...
