Ultrasmall silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) integrated into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Ag NC-MSNs) offer enhanced, long-term antibacterial activity. This novel nanocomposite shows superior potency against bacteria with minimal toxicity to mammalian cells.
Area of Science:
- Nanomaterials Science
- Biomedical Engineering
- Antimicrobial Research
Background:
- Ultrasmall silver nanoclusters (Ag NCs) are potent antibacterial agents due to their size and Ag+ ion release.
- Silver nanocluster oxidation leads to aggregation and reduced antibacterial efficacy in biological settings.
- Developing stable and effective silver nanocluster formulations is crucial for practical antimicrobial applications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize highly dispersed Ag NCs decorated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Ag NC-MSNs).
- To evaluate the antibacterial efficacy and stability of the novel Ag NC-MSNs nanocomposite.
- To assess the controlled release of Ag+ ions and cytotoxicity of Ag NC-MSNs.
Main Methods:
- Facile synthesis of Ag NCs decorated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Ag NC-MSNs).
- Characterization of Ag NC-MSNs for dispersion and stability.
- Antibacterial assays against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- Cytotoxicity evaluation on mammalian cells.
Main Results:
- Ag NC-MSNs demonstrated superior antibacterial potency, 17-fold and 27-fold higher than Ag NCs and Ag NP-MSNs, respectively.
- Homogeneous distribution of Ag NCs within the MSN matrix facilitated controlled Ag+ ion release.
- Effective antibacterial concentrations of Ag NC-MSNs exhibited minimal toxicity towards mammalian cells.
- The nanocomposite showed broad-spectrum activity against pathogenic bacteria.
Conclusions:
- Ag NC-MSNs represent a stable and highly effective antibacterial agent with enhanced potency.
- The mesoporous silica nanoparticle support is key to controlled silver ion release and improved antimicrobial activity.
- This novel Ag NC-MSNs nanocomposite holds significant promise for treating microbial infections with reduced host toxicity.

Bone as Supporting Connective Tissue
Bone Matrix
Bone, or osseous tissue, is a connective tissue that has a large amount of two different types of matrix material. The organic matrix is similar to the matrix material found in other connective tissues, including some amount of collagen and elastic fibers. This gives strength and flexibility to the tissue. The inorganic matrix consists of mineral salts— mostly calcium salts—...
