Summary

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare the efficacy of three different irrigation methods in removing the smear layer from root canal walls using 7% maleic acid.
  • To determine the optimal irrigation technique for different root canal thirds.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty maxillary anterior teeth were used, with root canals enlarged to size F4.
  • Three irrigation groups were established: EndoUltra activation, EndoSafe irrigation system, and side-vented needle irrigation, all using 7% maleic acid.
  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was employed for smear layer evaluation, with data analyzed using statistical tests.

Main Results:

  • Both EndoSafe and needle irrigation showed significantly better smear layer removal in the middle third compared to the apical third.
  • Needle irrigation demonstrated minimal smear layer removal overall.
  • The EndoUltra group was most effective in removing smear layer in the apical third of the root canal.

Conclusions:

  • EndoSafe needle irrigation combined with 7% maleic acid provided the best overall smear layer removal.
  • EndoUltra activation demonstrated superior performance specifically in the apical third of the root canal.
