A novel Solid Phase Microextraction on a Screw (MES) method offers rapid, efficient, and inexpensive analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water. This technique provides accurate PAH detection with high recovery rates, simplifying environmental monitoring.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Environmental Science
Background:
- Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common environmental pollutants.
- Accurate detection of PAHs in water samples is crucial for environmental monitoring and public health.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a rapid, efficient, simple, and inexpensive method for the extraction and determination of PAHs.
- To apply Solid Phase Microextraction on a Screw (MES) coupled with Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) for PAH analysis.
Main Methods:
- Development of a novel Solid Phase Microextraction on a Screw (MES) technique using polypyrrole (PPy)-coated screws.
- Optimization of extraction parameters including sampling flow rate, loading/desorption cycles, and desorption solvent volume.
- Application of MES-GC-MS for the extraction and determination of six PAHs in well water samples.
Main Results:
- The MES-GC-MS method achieved low detection limits for PAHs (0.5-1 μg/L) and wide linear ranges (2-600 μg/L).
- High correlation coefficients (R > 0.99) and good relative recoveries (83.0-104.0%) were obtained for the PAHs.
- The method demonstrated good interday and intraday precision (RSD% 3.9-8.9%) and effective matrix effect evaluation in real water samples.
Conclusions:
- The developed MES-GC-MS method is a promising technique for the rapid and cost-effective analysis of PAHs in water.
- MES offers a miniaturized solid-phase extraction approach without backpressure, simplifying sample preparation.
- This method provides a reliable tool for environmental monitoring of PAH contamination.
