Summary
A 71-year-old man with ischemic priapism was diagnosed with essential thrombocythemia. Treatment with hydroxyurea resolved the priapism and decreased platelet count, preventing recurrence.
Area of Science:
- Hematology
- Urology
- Oncology
Background:
- Ischemic priapism, characterized by prolonged painful erection, can lead to penile tissue damage.
- High platelet counts are associated with thrombotic events and can be a sign of underlying myeloproliferative disorders.

Compounds Essential to Human Function
10.0K
The human body is composed of cells that are fundamentally made up of several different molecules. These molecules are essential to carry out all physiological processes in the body and are broadly classified into organic and inorganic based on their chemical structures.
Inorganic Compounds Essential to Human Functioning
Inorganic compounds essential to human functioning include water, salts, acids, and bases. These compounds are inorganic, i.e., they do not have a carbon-hydrogen bond. Water...

Essential Minerals for Bone Health
6.0K
The minerals contained in all of the food we consume are essential for our organ systems. However, certain essential minerals, such as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, and fluoride, largely affect bone health.
Calcium and Phosphorus
Calcium is a critical component of bones, especially in the form of calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate. Since the body cannot make calcium, it must be obtained from the diet. However, calcium cannot be absorbed from the small intestine without...

Data Reporting and Recording
5.3K
Reporting and recording are crucial in data documentation. The timely, thorough, and accurate documentation of facts is essential when recording patient data. Failure to record findings during an assessment or interpretation of a problem will result in loss of information and make the patient document unreliable. The reader is left with general impressions if the information is not specific. A recording is documenting data of the individual's health information in a traceable, secure, and...

11:31'Bioluminescent' Reporter Phage for the Detection of Category A Bacterial Pathogens
14.0K
A simple method for the identification of priority bacterial pathogens is to use genetically engineered reporter phage. These reporter phage, which are specific to their particular host species, are capable of rapidly transducing a bioluminescent signal response to host cells. Herein, we describe the use of reporter phage for the detection of Yersinia...

12:00A Simplified Technique for Producing an Ischemic Wound Model
17.8K
We have developed a minimally invasive technique to create a rabbit ischemic ear wound model by dividing the central artery and nerve and the cranial neurovascular bundle. A subcutaneous tunnel then cuts all subcutaneous tissues. This procedure causes minimal skin disruption and can be safely used in diabetic...
