A Scalable, Cell-Based Method for the Functional Assessment of Ube3a Variants

2.4K
A simple and scalable method was developed to assess the functional significance of missense variants in Ube3a, a gene whose loss and gain of function are linked to both Angelman syndrome and autism spectrum...

Histone Variants at the Centromere02:30

Histone Variants at the Centromere

5.0K
Histone variants are the histone proteins with structural and sequence variations. These variants may be regarded as “mutant” forms that replace their canonical histone counterparts in the nucleosomes. Specific post-translational modifications on the histone variants enable further chromatin complexity and regulate tissue-specific gene expression. The most common histone variants are from histone H2A, H2B, and linker histone H1 families. However, several variants of histone H3...

Transthoracic Speckle Tracking Echocardiography for the Quantitative Assessment of Left Ventricular Myocardial Deformation

20.1K
Speckle tracking echocardiography is an emerging diagnostic imaging technique for the quantitative assessment of global and regional myocardial performance. Standard view echocardiographic motion images are recorded and deformation parameters are subsequently measured by automated continuous frame-by-frame tracking and motion analysis of speckles within the B-mode images of the...

Assessing Intracardiac Vortices with High Frame-Rate Echocardiography-Derived Blood Speckle Imaging in Newborns

1.9K
The present protocol uses echocardiography-derived blood speckle imaging technology to visualize intracardiac hemodynamics in newborns. The clinical utility of this technology is explored, the rotational body of fluid within the left ventricle (known as a vortex) is accessed, and its significance in understanding diastology is...

    Summary

Nonlocal Means (NLM) and variant methods effectively reduce speckle noise in digital coherent imaging systems. These techniques improve image quality and are more feasible than other denoising methods.

    Area of Science:

    • Optics and Imaging Science
    • Image Processing and Signal Analysis

    Background:

    • Digital coherent imaging systems, like digital speckle pattern interferometry, suffer from speckle noise degrading image quality.
    • Speckle noise, arising from the coherent light source, limits the application scope of these advanced imaging systems.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the performance of Nonlocal Means (NLM) and its variants for speckle noise reduction.
    • To compare NLM-based methods with existing speckle denoising techniques for amplitude and phase images.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizing NLM-shaped adaptive patches and NLM-reprojection schemes for denoising.
    • Quantifying performance using Peak-to-Signal Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Image Quality Index (IQI).

    Main Results:

    • NLM and variant methods demonstrate significant improvements in intensity and phase images.
    • These denoising techniques show superior performance compared to other existing speckle reduction methods.

    Conclusions:

    • NLM-based denoising methods are highly effective and feasible for speckle noise reduction.
    • The study confirms the ability of NLM variants to favorably enhance image quality in digital coherent imaging.
