Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence01:16

Hypothesis Test for Test of Independence

7.4K
The test of independence is a chi-square-based test used to determine whether two variables or factors are independent or dependent. This hypothesis test is used to examine the independence of the variables. One can construct two qualitative survey questions or experiments based on the variables in a contingency table. The goal is to see if the two variables are unrelated (independent) or related (dependent). The null and alternative hypotheses for this test are:

Bias in Epidemiological Studies01:29

Bias in Epidemiological Studies

1.3K
Biases can arise at various stages of research, from study design and data collection to analysis and interpretation. Recognizing and addressing these biases is essential to ensure the validity and reliability of epidemiological findings.Broadly speaking, biases in epidemiology fall into three main categories: selection bias, information bias, and confounding. A more detailed description of possible biases is:

Odds Ratio01:09

Odds Ratio

1.7K
The odds ratio (OR) is a statistical measure used extensively in epidemiology and research to quantify the strength of association between exposure and outcome across different groups. Unlike relative risk, which compares the probabilities of an event occurring, the odds ratio compares the odds of an event occurring in the exposed group to the odds of it occurring in the unexposed group. The odds, in this context, are calculated as the probability of the event happening divided by the...

Hazard Ratio01:12

Hazard Ratio

565
The hazard ratio (HR) is a widely used measure in clinical trials to compare the risk of events, such as death or disease recurrence, between two groups over time. It reflects the ratio of hazard rates—the instantaneous risk of the event occurring—between a treatment group and a control group. This measure provides valuable insights into the relative effectiveness of a treatment by assessing how the risk of an event differs between the two groups.
For example, in a clinical trial...

Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

427
Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep01:24

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

403
Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue.
Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Summary

Binge drinking in young adults may be a costly sexual signal, influenced by the local sex ratio. Higher ratios of men to women correlate with increased male binge drinking and decreased female binge drinking.

Area of Science:

  • Evolutionary psychology
  • Behavioral ecology
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Binge drinking among young men has been theorized as a "costly signal" of mate value.
  • This signal may indicate an individual's capacity to withstand negative consequences.
  • The expression of such signals can be context-dependent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between the operational sex ratio (OSR) and binge drinking rates in young adults.
  • To test evolutionary hypotheses regarding costly signaling and risk-taking behavior.
  • To determine if the local sex ratio influences binge drinking conditionally.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized archived binge drinking data (2009-2012) and U.S. Census Bureau OSR data.
  • Analyzed data at the county level across 3,143 U.S. counties.
  • Employed mixed-effects models to assess the association between OSR and binge drinking.

Main Results:

  • A higher OSR (more men than women) was linked to increased male binge drinking rates.
  • Conversely, a higher OSR was associated with decreased female binge drinking rates.
  • Specific age groups (20-29 and 50+) showed a stronger OSR-binge drinking correlation.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support the evolutionary theory of costly sexual signaling.
  • Binge drinking appears to function as a conditional sexual signal.
  • The local sex ratio and age are significant regulators of this behavior.
