    Summary

We developed all-metallic grating couplers for efficient fiber coupling. These compact devices convert vertical fiber modes to surface plasmon polaritons, enabling broadband performance.

    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Nanotechnology
    • Optical Engineering

    Background:

    • Efficient fiber-optic coupling is crucial for integrated photonic circuits.
    • Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) offer a pathway for miniaturizing optical components.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To demonstrate all-metallic grating couplers for vertical fiber-to-plasmonic mode conversion.
    • To achieve compact and broadband coupling with a small footprint.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of all-metallic grating couplers on a metal layer.
    • Characterization using periodic and apodized grating designs.
    • Integration with a focusing arrangement for miniaturization.

    Main Results:

    • Demonstrated vertical fiber mode conversion into surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs).
