Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the 'Me first' training program.
  • To assess improvements in clinicians' attitudes and communication skills when working with PPs.

Main Methods:

  • 69 clinicians (medical, nursing, allied health) completed pre-training, post-training, and 4-6 week follow-up questionnaires.
  • Attitudes were measured using the Leeds Attitudes to Concordance II (LATCon II) scale.
  • Communication skills were assessed using the Effective Listening and Interactive Communication Scale (ELICS).

Main Results:

  • Clinicians reported significant improvements in attitude and communication skills post-training.
  • These improvements were generally maintained at the 4-6 week follow-up.
  • Allied health staff did not maintain improved attitudes at follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • The 'Me first' training shows promise for enhancing clinician skills and attitudes towards PPs.
  • Further research is recommended to confirm patient-reported outcomes and decision-making improvements.
