Background:

  • Early detection and monitoring of glaucoma progression are crucial for preserving vision.
  • Macular structure, function, and vascular changes are increasingly recognized as important indicators in glaucoma.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if macular structure, function, and vessel density (VD) measurements can predict foveal threshold (FT) outcomes.
  • To investigate the predictive value of these parameters in eyes with open-angle glaucoma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 195 eyes (134 glaucoma, 61 controls).
  • Optical coherence tomography angiography and 24-2 visual field testing with FT measurements.
  • Partial correlation and linear regression analyses to assess associations.

Main Results:

  • FT correlated significantly with macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (mGCIPL) thickness and visual field mean sensitivity (MS).
  • FT also showed significant correlations with parafoveal vessel density (VD).
  • mGCIPL thickness, central 5-degree VF MS, and parafoveal VD independently predicted FT in multivariate analyses.

Conclusions:

  • Macular VD, mGCIPL thickness, and central 5-degree VF MS are independent predictors of FT outcomes.
  • These parameters can forecast visual function in patients with early-to-moderate open-angle glaucoma.
