Abstract:
Reliable procedures are given for the purification of perylene, and for the preparation and purification of 3,10-perylenequinone, 1,12-perylenequinone, 2,11-dihydroxy-3,10-perylenequinone, 4,9-dihydroxy3,10-perylenequinone, 4-oxo-4H-benz[de]anthracene-7,8-dicarboxylic anhydride, phenanthrene 1,8,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride, and anthraquinone-l,5-dicarboxylic acid. Data on the physical properties of 3,9-perylenequinone are also reported.

Preparation of Epoxides
Epoxides result from alkene oxidation, which can be achieved by a) air, b) peroxy acids, c) hypochlorous acids, and d) halohydrin cyclization.
Epoxidation with Peroxy Acids
Epoxidation of alkenes via oxidation with peroxy acids involves the conversion of a carbon–carbon double bond to an epoxide using the oxidizing agent meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid, commonly known as MCPBA. Since the O–O bond of peroxy acids is very weak, the addition of electrophilic oxygen of peroxy acids to...
